Burgettstown commencement set for Tuesday

BURGETTSTOWN – Burgettstown Junior/Senior High School’s commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Niagara Pavilion.

Maggie Stiffler, daughter of Lisa and Dave Stiffler of Burgettstown, is the valedictorian. She is student council vice president and a member of the National Honor Society, Leadership Council, Gifted Program and SWAL. She was the freshman and sophomore class president and had the lead in the 2013 performance of “Peter Pan” and the 2014 performance of “The Wizard of Oz.” She participated in school musicals all four years. She received the Amelia Earhart Award, Lions Award and Trib Total Media Outstanding Young Citizen Award and was named a Weirton Elks Teen of the Month. She plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh and study biology.

Amanda Bernola, daughter of Teresa Bernola and Rick Bernola of Burgettstown, is the salutatorian. She is senior class secretary and a member of the National Honor Society, biology club, physics club, float committee and powder puff team. She participated in the spring musical. She received High Honors, Math Award, Academic Letter of Merit, Academic Certificate of Honor, Gold President’s Award for Educational Excellence, Eugene and Nell Petrucci Scholarship and Mary Jeanne Hanna Scholarship. She was named a Weirton Elks Lodge Teenager of the Month. She was a member of the volleyball team and lettered three years. She was named the MVP and Second Team All-Star. She received the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete Award. She plans to attend St. Vincent College and study mathematics.

Katrina Fleeman, daughter of Kenneth and Michelle Fleeman of Burgettstown, is ranked third. She is the senior class president and was junior class president and freshman class treasurer. She is a member of the National Honor Society Leadership Council and the H.O.P.E. Club Board of Directors and directed the spring musical. She is a member of the Gifted Program. She received High Honors and the President’s Education Gold Award. She received the Challenge Program Community Service Award and was named a Weirton Elks Lodge Teen of the Month. She plans to attend West Virginia University and study business.

Emily O’Brien, daughter of Amy and Matthew O’Brien of Burgettstown, is ranked fourth. She is a member of the National Honor Society, H.O.P.E. Club and Gifted Program. She plans to attend Chatham University and study biology.

Sarah Smith, daughter of Dale and Debra Smith of Bulger, is ranked fifth. She is a member of the H.O.P.E. Club Board of Directors and president of her 4-H Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Girl Scouts. She has received the 4-H Outstanding Teen Leadership Award and the Girl Scout Gold Award. She received the President’s Outstanding Academic Excellence Award and High Honors. She is the cross country team captain and track and field team captain, lettering four years in both sports. She participated in the Black Hills Invitational, receiving third place for the two-mile run, and the Washington and Green County Coaches Invitational, where she placed seventh in the 3,200-meter relay. She plans to attend Westminster College and study accounting.

Jordan Tunno, daughter of John and Cheri Tunno of Burgettstown, is ranked sixth. She is student council president and senior class vice president and a member of the student forum, National Honors Society, Gifted Program, biology club, ski club, powder puff team and homecoming court. Tunno participated in the spring musical, gave the morning announcements and was an office assistant. She received the President’s Gold Award, High Honors, Megan J. Phillis Academic Memorial Award, Walter Budash Memorial Scholarship, Patsy Yanni Scholarship, BASF Volleyball Scholarship and the Chuck Mahoney Scholarship. She is the volleyball team captain, lettering for three years, and the track and field captain, lettering for four years. She received the volleyball “Most Digs” award. She plans to attend Gannon University and enter the physician’s assistant program.

Brandon Bartley, son of George and Sherry Bartley of Burgettstown, is ranked seventh. He is a member of the comic club and received the Academic Certificate of Honor and Gold Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. He is a member of the Burgettstown/Southside varsity soccer team and the Burgettstown Blue Flames travel team. He received the Senior Athletic Award. He plans to attend Robert Morris University and study cyber forensics and computer information systems.

Michael Bandi, son of Rebecca Kerekes and Charles Bandi of Bulger, is ranked eighth. He is a member of the student council, biology club, physics club and National Honors Society. He was the lead in the 2014 production of “The Wizard of Oz.” He received the Academic Letter of Honor, Academic Certificate of Honor, Gold President’s Award for Educational Excellence and Excellence is Psychology Student Award. He was named a Weirton Elks Lodge Teenager of the Month. He is the track and field captain, lettering two years, and is a member of the cross country team, lettering four years. He received the Track and Field Scholarship Award, Edwin “Dutch” Hill Memorial Scholarship Award and Certificate of Outstanding Achievement in Cross Country. He plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh and study engineering.

Lauren Markish, daughter of Craig and Heidi Markish of Burgettstown, is ranked ninth. She is a member of the National Honor Society, biology club, gifted program and yearbook staff. She plans to attend Washington and Jefferson College and study English and education.

Hanna Dubich, daughter of Melana Kulesa and Derek Dubich of Burgettstown, is ranked 10th. She is a member of the Asian Culture Club, National Honor Society, 4-H and Girl Scouts. She received Honors and the Girl Scout Gold Award. She plans to attend Pittsburgh Technical Institute and study graphic design.
