Lease, repairs at pool focus of parks board

WEIRTON – The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation discussed the pending lease of the Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Pool Thursday, as well as equipment purchases and repairs.

A new domestic hot water heater is up and running, making hot showers possible again at Millsop Community Center, according to Coty Shingle, parks director of maintenance and operations. The hot water heater cost about $40,000. Another steam boiler has been out of operation, but the board voted to accept a bid to repair it by Ft. Steuben Maintenance for $24,800. Repairs will begin next week and should take about 10 days to two weeks to complete, Shingle said. The steam boiler was originally purchased new for about $100,000.

At their June meeting, the board voted to lease the Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Pool at Marland Heights Park to the Marland Heights Community Association. The association has been working for the past few years to revitalize and reopen the pool site, which is now recognized by the West Virginia National Registry of Historic Places.

After a brief executive session Thursday, it was determined that the attorneys must meet to finalize the lease. The board is being represented by City Attorney Vincent Gurrera, and the MHCA is being represented by David B. Cross, an attorney based in Wellsburg.

The MHCA will be hosting a “Pool Together” craft show at Marland Heights Park on July 26 from noon to 6 p.m., according to member Iris Himmelrick. There will be at least 50 vendors and five food vendors as well as entertainment, weather permitting.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter will also be on hand with adoptable pets.

On Aug. 2, MedExpress will host their second-annual Weirton Kidz Day in the park, a free day of fun for kids and their families from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All donations will go to MHCA for the revitalization of the pool.

An Oldies Dance in the park featuring Legend and DJ Harry Stock will take place Aug. 30, and a car show will take place Sept. 14.
