United Way gets a big donation from event

WHEELING – The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley was recently presented a check in the amount of $3,600 from donations collected at the 18th annual Plaza West Fest held July 9 in St. Clairsville.

The festival is co-sponsored by the Citizens Bank and Riesbeck’s Food Market, with assistance from subsidiary sponsors United Dairy, Nickles Bakery, the Health Plan, Our Family Brands and NAPA Auto Parts.

Scott A. Everson, president and CEO of the Citizens Bank, said, “We are grateful to our co-sponsor, Riesbeck’s, and to all our subsidiary sponsors. From the onset, we have always donated all the proceeds from this fun family-oriented community event to The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley to help the agencies and families that receive assistance from them.”

“We thank everyone who attended and gave so generously, allowing us to reach our goal of $3,600.”

Scott Briggs, store director at Riesbeck’s, added, “I would like to express my appreciation to all the sponsors, the volunteers and especially the customers that made this event such a great success. Each year this event gets better and better and shows the wonderful generosity of our community.”

Dennis Kasprowski, area general manager for Riesbeck’s, said, “This year was the 18th consecutive year for Plaza West Fest. Riesbeck’s, along with our co-sponsor The Citizens Bank, is proud to sponsor this great community event. We are especially pleased to report that the $3,600 in donations received benefiting the United Way was a record year exceeding last year by $800. Special thanks to all our sponsors and our customers in helping to make this event a much looked-forward-to tradition every year.”

With donations to the United Way, festival-goers enjoyed hotdogs, chips, ice cream and Pepsi, rocked to music of EasyStreet and were treated to the fireworks display from Pyrotechnics by Presutti.

Children received free washable tattoos and stickers and neon glo-necklaces were available for purchase, with proceeds also going to United Way.

George Smoulder, executive director of United Way, said, “I would like to thank The Citizens Bank, Riesbeck’s, all the subsidiary sponsors and the generosity of all of those who donated to assist us in responding to the needs of individuals and families in our community. Whether it is a family in need of food/help with a utility bill, a person in need of a prescription, or a senior requiring in-home services in order to be able to continue living independently, the social service needs in our Upper Ohio Valley are growing.”

“Every day our 29 United Way agencies provide critically needed social services in a kind and compassionate manner to those who are hurting. These funds will help many receive the services they so desperately need.”
