Pool lease one step closer to reality

WEIRTON – The Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation met with City Attorney Vincent Gurrera for a closed executive session Wednesday morning to discuss details of the lease of the Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Pool by the Marland Heights Community Association.

The group has been working in recent years to revitalize and reopen the pool site.

Attorneys representing the board and the MHCA have been working to finalize details in the lease over the summer. The parks department is being represented by Gurrera, and the MHCA is being represented by David B. Cross, an attorney based in Wellsburg.

Ward 7 Councilman and Parks Director Terry Weigel said that “the ball is in their court now,” and the proposed lease will undergo another round of review by Cross and the MHCA. The executive session was held to try and keep the process moving forward until alterations of the lease are finished, Weigel said.

In related business, the MHCA will host an oldies dance in the park featuring Legend and DJ Harry Stock from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. A car cruise is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14, and the rain date will be Sept. 21. All proceeds from those events will go toward restoring the pool.
