Weirton Daily Times recognized by WVPA
WEIRTON – The Weirton Daily Times has been recognized by the West Virginia Press Association as part of the organization’s 2014 Better Newspaper Contest.
The awards were presented during the WVPA convention, held Thursday through today in Canaan Valley.
Among the paper’s news and sports staff recognized are Janice Kiaski in the category of Best Lifestyle Columnist and Mike Mathison in the category of Best Sports Photography.
Kiaski received a second-place award in the category for columns including “On a new plateau this Mother’s Day;” “Tap dancing my way to a ‘bucket list;'” and “Responding to an anticipated question.”
Mathison was awarded with third place for his photo “Oh What a Night,” which depicted members of the Weirton Madonna football team during their West Virginia Class A quarterfinal game victory over Wahama in November.
The Weirton Daily Times’ advertising department also was recognized with two awards, including a first place win in the Best Progress Edition category for the 2012 Pride and Progress edition, titled “Raising the Bar.”
Advertising staff also received third place recognition in the category of Best Special Section – Sports for the 2013 College and NFL Preview.
The Weirton Daily Times is part of Division 2 in the press association.
