Century old church burned in 1965

The 118-year-old Florence Presbyterian Church was destroyed by fire Feb. 26, 1963. That building was built in 1845 across the street from the church building constructed in 1964 to replace the gutted church. Only three walls of the original church remained standing following the fire, and the church’s blue stained-glass windows were destroyed. The construction of the new building was funding by selling the antique bricks recovered from the rubble to Thomas Millsop and Secretary of the Treasury George Humphrey. This photo was provided by the Fort Vance Historical Society. The society welcomes those who would like to share digital copies of vintage photos or allow their vintage photos to be scanned into the society’s digital collection. The historical society needs assistance curating its collections; work is done Wednesdays, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Fort Vance Room at the Burgettstown Community Library located at 2 Kerr St. For information about the historical society or to make a donation of funds or to the permanent collection, contact vraninin@aol.com or “like” their Facebook page by searching “Fort Vance Historical Society.” — ContributedFLORENCE FIRE 4 col
