WEIRTON — One man was shot and one was arrested following an apparently botched drug transaction in southern Hancock County early Sunday morning, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said.

The 19-year-old male who was shot in the groin at 3111 Wylie Ridge Road was taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian, but his wounds were considered non-life threatening, Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said. His name was not released.

Arrested in connection with the incident was Jordan A. Manns, 18, who is being held in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville. He has been charged with malicious wounding and possession of cocaine, with a $200,000 surety cash bond on each charge.

Fletcher said Manns, the alleged shooter, arrived at the brick ranch house with two other people from the Steubenville area — a juvenile male and a juvenile female — late Saturday night or early Sunday morning to meet with the 19-year-old.

“It appears drugs were involved,” Fletcher said, declining to discuss further details.

“It’s still under investigation. What we know is that the subjects came from the Steubenville area to meet with a young man in the Hancock County area, with the possibility of drugs being involved.”

After the shooting, the gun was disposed of while the shooter was trying to flee, Fletcher said.

The weapon has not yet been recovered.

Fletcher said the department had extra officers out Saturday night because of a DUI checkpoint in Newell.

A deputy who was working the south zone at the time also was able to respond to the scene quickly, he said.

Assisting were officers from the detective division and the Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug Task Force.

The shooting happened in a rural part of southern Hancock County, about halfway between New Cumberland and Weirton.
