Runners hit the street in annual 5K
WEIRTON — They were on their marks, and ready to run in Weirton Friday.
Runners and walkers of all ages gathered at Marland Heights Park for the annual Marland Heights 5K Classic Community Race and Fitness Walk.
The yearly event, which started and finished at the park, included the headlining 5K race, with a route winding through the city’s Marland Heights neighborhood, as well as a 2-mile fitness walk and a series of youth fun runs.
Program Director Chris Krishak said, although the race didn’t get the attendance he was hoping to see, he believes the race went well.
“The turnout was a little lower than last year, but we had great weather,” Krishak said.
Krishak thanked those who volunteered to assist in putting the race together, as well as this year’s sponsors.
“I’d like to thank the Weir High swim team for their assistance,” he said.
Krishak also expressed appreciation to Marc Harris for his work in plotting out the race course. Harris has served as race coordinator for several years.
Following the race, participants were able to take part in a cookout at the park.
Awards were presented to the top three overall male and female finishers in the 5K, as well as the top three in each age group — 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and up — the top six finishers per category for the fitness walk, the top five finishers in each age group for the youth fun run, and the high school team award, which is presented to the high school with the best overall point average.
This year’s sponsors included Tri-State Medical Group, Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, the City of Weirton, Blakemore Insurance Agency, Wine and Beverage Merchants, Assure America, Ronnie Jones, Galloway Law Offices, Weirton Lumber, Weirton Madonna High School, Mario’s Restaurant, Gus’s Goodies, Serra Village, Jack Fowler-State Farm, Studio L, DiBacco’s, WesBanco, Marl-Inn, Weirton Medical Center, First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Hancock County Savings Bank, Franciscan University, Fox’s Pizza Den, McDonald’s, Convenient, Shop ‘n Save and the Mary H.
