Festival of Friendship set for weekend at area park

STEUBENVILLE — The Festival of Friendship featuring speakers, live music, presentations, a 5K race and children activities is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Belleview Park.

The festival is free and open to the public.

According to festival organizers the event will also have an Italian restaurant at the park.

The Cafe Amore Restaurant will open at 5 p.m. Friday.

Starting at 6 p.m. Friday a panel discussion will be held, involving Nancy Albin and Guido Piccarolo of Los Angeles Habilitation House; the Rev. Ashley Steele of the Urban Mission; and Sister Agnes Therese, of LAMP ministries who will talk about how the people each serves have been a good for their lives.

The 5K race will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday and at 9:15 p.m. children activities will start and continue until 6 p.m.

Also at 9:15 a.m. an original script will be performed live, featuring speeches and writings from Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton.

American Dream: A Journey with American Saints, a presentation on the lives and work of the North American Martyrs, St. Junipero Serra, St. Damien of Molokai, and St. Katherine Drexel will be presented at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

At noon Saturday there will be a panel on literature, including literature for children, featuring Rebecca Bratten Weiss, Maura Roan McKeegan and Marc Barnes.

Richard Holm, a retired CIA spy, will speak about his work and life at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Brad Boys band will perform at 2 p.m. and at 4 p.m. a panel discussion with Imam Bashar Arafat, Mark Danner, and Sister Agnes Therese, T. O. R., will focus on the historic meeting between St. Francis and Sultan al-Kamil in Egypt.

Saturday will conclude with American Dream: American Saints at 6 p.m., talks about Abraham Lincoln, MLK, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton at 7 p.m. and classic rock music by Xtremely Loaded band at 8 p.m.

The Sunday festival will begin with American Dream at 11 a.m. followed by a discussion at 12:15 p.m. on Lincoln, King, Day and Merton.

The Cafe Amore Restaurant will close at 2 p.m. Sunday.
