Free classes offer tips on cooking, grocery shopping

WELLSBURG — Those trying to put a nutritious meal on their dinner table under a tight budget or make heads or tails of the labels on many foods may want to attend a series of cooking classes sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service at the Brooke County Public Library.

Beginning Oct. 3 and continuing from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. each Monday through Nov. 21, the classes will be taught by Molly Poffenbarger, adult health educator for the WVU Extension Service’s Ohio County office.

Poffenbarger said attendance at all of the classes isn’t required, but those who participate in at least six will receive a cookbook and be entered into a drawing for a Crockpot.

Poffenbarger also will discuss how shoppers can save money at the grocery store and how lasagna, chili and other favorite dishes can be made healthier by substituting nutritious ingredients that don’t alter their flavor.

Poffenbarger said in addition to the “mobile kitchen” she uses to demonstrate cooking tips and share recipes, she also will be bringing small cooking utensils and recipes for participants.

Those interested in taking part should call (304) 737-1551 to register for the free classes.

Poffenberger said she also will share tips on determining the nutritional content of many foods and safe storage and handling of various foods.
