Projects to affect Brooke roads

The West Virginia Division of Highways has announced two projects affecing traffic on Brooke County roads.

In Weirton, the westbound and center lanes of Freedom Way will be closed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Wednesday through Friday, with two-way traffic maintained by flaggers.

During that time crews with BJAAM Environmental of Canal Fulton, Ohio will be extracting groundwater and remediating soil under the road contaminated by underground storage tanks for a gasoline station that were removed in 1994.

The project began last week.

In Wellsburg, a 2.5 mile section of Rabbit Hill Road will be reduced to one lane from Sept. 12 to 16 while crews with Southwestern Energy repair it. Two-way traffic will be maintained by flaggers.

In both cases, drivers should proceed slowly and expect delays. Either project could be postponed due to weather or other circumstances.
