Drug Take Back Day scheduled for Saturday

WASHINGTON — National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, organized by local law enforcement to remove unwanted and unused prescription drugs from area residences, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday throughout Washington County.

The service is free of charge with no questions asked. Drop boxes will be located at sites all over the county for disposal. Those interested are encouraged to take all expired, unwanted and unused drugs to these locations for proper disposal.

Local departments participating and locations include:

• McDonald Regional Police, 151 School St., McDonald, Pa.;

• Smith Township Police, 1848 Smith Township State Road, Slovan, Pa.;

• Mount Pleasant Township Police, 31 McCarrell Road, Hickory, Pa.; and

• Hanover Township Police, 11 Municipal Drive, Paris, Pa.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reports 6.4 million Americans aged 12 and older abused prescription drugs in 2015. Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of injury related-death, greater than the number of deaths from motor vehicles or firearms.

Many addicts obtain their drugs from friends and family.

The National Take Back Day helps to eliminate a source of these drugs.
