WEIRTON — A section of Pennsylvania Avenue affected by a land subsidence earlier this week will be closed indefinitely while officials look for a solution.

The slip, which also led to the collapse of a portion of the roadway and sidewalk between North 10th Street and Angela Street, began Monday.

Weirton City Manager Travis Blosser explained the West Virginia Division of Highways had engineers at the site Tuesday morning, working to determine the amount of damage from the slide and what measures could be taken.

“They’re not prepared to say the cause,” Blosser said, noting investigations are continuing.

There is no timeline as to when repairs to the roadway will be made, according to Blosser.

Blosser also cautioned area residents not to attempt to drive, or walk, through the affected area, noting there are plans to have the Weirton Police Department monitor the road to keep people away.

“It’s not safe,” Blosser said. “No one should be down there.”

Road closure signs are posted at the South 11th Street and Weir Avenue intersections with Pennsylvania Avenue.

According to a notice from the Division of Highways, officials have recommended a detour using state Route 2, U.S. 22 and Colliers Way onto Pennsylvania Avenue.

Blosser noted local detours will include South 11th Street, as well as Greenbrier Road, but cautioned residents to take precautions noting those roads usually do not deal with increased traffic numbers. Blosser also noted the school zones on South 11th Street.

“They need to be cognizant of the roadways,” Blosser said.
