WEIRTON — The Kmart store in Weirton will close its doors in mid-April.

Store managers confirmed Sears Holdings’ announcement Wednesday the store will be closing, but no date has yet been announced for the final day. A liquidation sale is scheduled to begin Jan. 6.

“We can confirm that we are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Kmart store at 250 Three Springs Drive in Weirton,” Howard Riefs, corporate communications director of Sears Holdings said. “The store will close to the public in mid-April. Until then, the store will remain open for customers.

“We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced.”

The number of workers is not publicly available and those eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other area Sears or Kmart stores, Riefs said. Most of those working at the Weirton store are doing so part-time, he said.

Riefs noted the company still has the Shop Your Way program available through its websites and mobile apps.

“We often hear from our members who are disappointed when we close a store, but our Shop Your Way membership platform, websites and mobile apps allow us to maintain these valued relationships long after a store closes its doors,” he said. “As a result, we hope to retain a portion of the sales previously associated with this store by maintaining our relationships with the members who shopped this location.”

This is the third such closing to affect the Weirton-Steubenville area — Sears Holdings closed the Kmart store in the Tri-State Plaza and the Sears store at the Fort Steuben Mall in Steubenville within the past 12 months.

There are both Kmart and Sears stores remaining in East Liverpool and Saint Clairsville, Ohio; a Kmart in Bridgeville, Pa.; and a Sears in Washington, Pa.

The Weirton Kmart opened in December 1974.
