WELLSBURG — The same parties that made August’s Farm to Table Dinner a successful fundraiser for the Brooke County Farmers’ Market are preparing now for their part in West Virginia’s Maple Days event.

Representatives of Family Roots Farm, the Barn With Inn Bed and Breakfast and Brooke Hills Park recently presented $1,000 raised by the Farm to Table Dinner to the Brooke County Farmers’ Market board.

Brooke Hills Park also received $500 from the event, and Franklin United Methodist Church, which lent its kitchen for the event, received a donation.

Held Aug. 27, the Farm to Table Dinner included stops at Family Roots Farm, which has received awards for its maple syrup and maple sugar; dinner at Brooke Hills Park; and dessert at the Barn With Inn, a nearby bed and breakfast.

Homer-Laughlin China Co. was a sponsor for the event, supplying dishes and a drawing prize.

Organizers aimed to keep the event small and intimate, selling a limited number of tickets. About 45 attended and the bed and breakfast was filled, with some guests traveling from New York, Pittsburgh and Morgantown, said Chatman Neely, who runs the Barn With Inn with Harry Sanford.

Britney Hervey Farris, who runs Family Roots Farm with her husband, Charlie, and parents, Fred and Cathy Hervey, said response was positive and there are plans to hold another this year.

The three groups are preparing to participate in the state’s Maple Days promotion. Set on and around March 18, Maple Days serves to promote maple-related events throughout the state, including the Maple Syrup Festival in Pickens.

Family Roots, the Barn With Inn and Brooke Hills Park will team to offer food and activities that day.

The Herveys will offer free tours, samples and activities for children, including a scavenger hunt organized by retired teacher Diane Lucero, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Brooke Hills Park will serve a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and teens and $3 for children age 12 and under and can be purchased that day or in advance at the park’s clubhouse, the Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service and Mark’s Carry Out.

There also will be a Winter Market at the park, with a variety of food and handmade items sold by local vendors. Vendors interested in participating should call Dale Brant, farmers’ market board member, at (304) 479-1911.

Proceeds from the event will go to the farmers’ market.

The Barn With Inn will offer a 20 percent discount to guests, and The Daily Perk, a Follansbee coffee shop, will feature Family Roots maple syrup on its menu that day.

Family Roots is one of several local farms and vendors preparing for the Brooke County Farmers’ Market, which will be held on Wednesdays this summer outside the Follansbee Tractor Supply store and on Saturdays at a Wellsburg location to be announced.
