Essay winner
Tommy Charnie, left, a seventh-grade student at St. Paul School in Weirton, has been selected as the statewide winner of the 2016-2017 West Virginia Municipal League “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest. He was recognized Wednesday by Weirton Mayor Harold Miller. Charnie received a plaque and $250 for winning the contest. As part of his essay, Charnie suggested a variety of ways to improve the city, including providing funding for higher education and increasing teacher pay, building a homeless shelter and holding town hall meetings with residents. He also suggested building more parks and lowering the business tax to encourage economic growth, and focusing on lowering crime rates. — Craig Howell
