NEW CUMBERLAND — Hancock County commissioners will be looking for contractors in the next month to handle lawn maintenance at several county-owned locations.

The commission approved a motion Thursday to advertise for grass cutting at county-owned properties, with proof of liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance required.

A total of five packages will be available for contractors and lawn-maintenance companies to bid on, including:

• Package 1: Hancock County Senior Center, Hancock County Animal Shelter, Hancock County Storage Building — all three are located on Gas Valley Road in New Cumberland.

• Package 2: Flatts Cemetery, Union Cemetery and Methodist Cemetery, all in New Manchester.

• Package 3: Three Springs Drive Cemetery, Cove Valley playground and the Peter Tarr Furnace, all in Weirton.

• Package 4: Laurel Hollow Park and Clarke Field in Newell, and Lawrenceville Park in Chester.

• Package 5: Hancock County 911/OEM Center, located on the west side of Route 2 across from the West Virginia State Police Department in New Cumberland. The successful bidders will be announced at the March 16 commission meeting. Information is available at the open bids page on the commission’s website.

In other business:

• The commission approved to place correspondence from Fred McDonald, executive director of the Northern Panhandle Community Criminal Justice Board, as a matter of record, to which McDonald’s letter requested approval of an agreement concerning the number of appointed board members.

Commissioner Jeff Davis pointed out that Sheriff Ralph Fletcher and County Prosecutor James Davis are two of the members on the countywide board.

• Also made a matter of record was a request from Pat Ford, executive director of the Business Development Corporation, for $30,000 for the 2018 fiscal year. Davis motioned to place the request in files and would look at funding for the BDC at a later time.

The commission will hold its next regular meeting at 2:30 p.m. March 2 at the commission office at the Hancock County Courthouse.
