WEIRTON — Williams Golf and Country Club was filled with the sights and flavors of New Orleans Saturday, as the Rotary Club of Weirton Heights held its annual Mardi Gras Gala fundraiser event.

Decked out in traditional Mardi Gras colors of green, purple and gold, and listening to music provided by the Groove Doctors, guests celebrated throughout the evening.

Proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will benefit the new BreastCare Center at Weirton Medical Center.

Club Co-President Paul Lauttamus thanked his fellow Rotarians for their work in putting this year’s fundraiser gala together, noting the club’s history of contributing to local groups, organizations and civic projects.

“We had a record number of sponsors this year,” Lauttamus said. “We reached our goal of raising $50,000 and we sold out all of our tickets.”

Speaking on behalf of Weirton Medical Center Saturday, Dr. Rachel Gilman announced construction on the new BreastCare Center is scheduled to begin this spring, and take between six and nine months to complete.

The 4,300-square-foot facility will be located on the main floor of the hospital’s Medical Office Building near the existing All About Women Suite.

“The goal is to have all of our women’s health care services all in one place,” Gilman said.

The Mardi Gras Gala is among the club’s biggest events of the year, and has been used in the past to raise funds for local youth sports organizations, theater groups, museums and more.

“The Weirton Heights Rotary has been able to give back $750,000 to the community through the event’s history,” Lauttamus said.

Lauttamus said he was thankful for the turnout, and looks forward to the club continuing its work for the Weirton area and its residents.
