School board to consider staff cuts

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Board of Education will meet today to consider cuts to 14 professional personnel and 11 service personnel.

State policy requires county school boards to hold hearings to hear appeals from any staff who may be considered for termination through a reduction in force or transferred to other positions.

Each employee may request a private or public hearing.

Following the hearings, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., the board is expected to make a decision on the proposed terminations and transfers.

School officials have cited a decline in federal and state funding and school enrollment as reasons for the proposed cuts.

Some positions, including some special education staff, are routinely layed off, then reinstated after federal funding for them is ascertained.
