WEIRTON — It was blue collar with a twist.

The Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce kicked off its first Brew, ‘Que and Country event Friday — the spiritual successor to its Hog Wild in the Hollow and the third year that the chamber has hosted a casual event featuring a range of craft beer provided by Wine & Beverage Merchants, Steel City Distributors and Waldorf Distributing Co. and homestyle-food provided by Convenient Food Mart.

“It’s something fun — it’s Friday, get off work and come down and have some good food and fun,” Chamber President Brenda Mull said.

The event also featured a first — a French burger contest. Several local restaurants, including Oasis Bar, Patty’s Family Restaurant and Frank’s Broadview, along with Weir High School football Coach Tony Filberto, competed to see who would be named the Official French Burger of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, along with a cash award as part of the chamber’s Chamber Challenge.

“Coach Filberto makes a French burger, so he and his wife, Rosanna, are participating,” Mull said.

Contestants in the were provided with 5 pounds of ground meat from Convenient Food Mart, and the winner was determined by popular vote.

Zeke Blake performed a variety of country tunes, Alexander Archery also set up so those interested could try their hand, and local businesses donated a variety of door prizes.

“The local businesses have been very generous,” Mull said.

Sponsors include James White Construction, Lyle’s Auto, United Bank and Allietta Ford.
