Radiography program gets max accreditation at West Virginia Northern

WHEELING — The radiography program at West Virginia Northern Community College has earned the maximum reaccreditation award of eight years.

Radiography Program Director Misty Kahl said the college was notified of the award by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. She explained the most recent eight-year accreditation of the program ended in 2016 “so this is an ongoing reaccreditation award.”

The lengthy accreditation process involved the submission of a multi-page self-study report followed by a comprehensive site visit of the Radiography Program by JRCERT officials and the executive director of the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board of Examiners. The site visit team submitted its report of findings to the JRCERT board of directors which determined the award.

“That the accrediting team extended the top number of years of accreditation to the Radiography Program is a testament to the diligence and hard work of the faculty, staff and students,” Vicki L. Riley, Northern’s president, said. “All deserve thanks and congratulations,” she added.

“We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the maximum accreditation award from the JRCERT,” Kahl said. “The accreditation process is very involved and requires a great amount of work from everyone. The site visit team was very impressed with the Radiography Program faculty and instructors, students, college staff and facilities and the clinical education sites. Ongoing assessment allows us to constantly evaluate and improve the educational process.”

The WVNCC Radiography Program faculty consists of Kahl, Clinical Coordinator Missy Stephens and Adjunct Clinical Instructors Holly Wiley and Tonya Trigg. Together, they have a combined total of 96 years’ experience working as registered practicing radiographers and educators.

The JRCERT is the only agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for the accreditation of traditional and distance delivery education programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance and medical dosimetry.
