Officials eye Starvaggi Park improvements

WEIRTON — Weirton parks officials continue to look into potential improvement projects at Starvaggi Memorial Park.

During Thursday’s meeting of the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, it was announced the board had been awarded a $50,000 grant from the J.C. Williams Foundation to assist with plans to repave the tennis and basketball courts at the park.

The board suggested creating a list of potential projects for the park.

“There’s a lot of work that needs done up there,” board Chair Ed Bowman said. “That pool is our gem in this city as far as summer activities.”

In addition to the tennis and basketball court paving, the board noted the court will need new fencing and lighting.

Parks Executive Director Terry Weigel noted there could be a time limit for the tennis court project, as the Weir High and Weirton Madonna tennis teams will begin their practices in the spring. Both teams use the Starvaggi courts.

Several board members suggested looking for other funding sources to assist with the project.

Board member Deb Witkowski also suggested considering the possibility of fundraiser events, recalling auctions and other activities held in the past.

Board member Mike Adams said there also was the possibility some groups and businesses might provide “in-kind” services or offer donations to assist with projects.

Bowman also brought up the possibility of purchasing new benches to place throughout the park, as well as the repaving of the parking lot.

In other business, the board:

¯ re-elected Bowman to serve as chair for the next year

¯ approved the appointment of Iris Himmelrick to the board, following the resignation of Ted Dragisich. The board also voted to give Dragisich an honorary membership to the Millsop Community Center following 10 years of service on the board.
