Steubenville Police task force will be formed

STEUBENVILLE — City Manager Jim Mavromatis has announced the creation of a five-member police task force that will take on the problem areas of the city starting in the near future.

“People in the community will see an increase in our police presence in certain neighborhoods that are known to have illegal activities. And, I can tell you Veterans Park will be targeted for enforcement,” Mavromatis told City Council Tuesday night.

“We will have five police officers on this task force, that will include a supervisor. They will focus on the criminal issues, and the law will be enforced,” Mavromatis continued.

He said two key issues will be drug dealers and prostitution.

“Working together as a unit the task force will take an aggressive approach to these problems. We will not put up with drug dealers in our community,” Mavromatis said.

Police Chief Bill McCafferty said the task force will focus on the city’s hot spots.

“This is an effort to make it very uncomfortable for drug addicts to come to Steubenville to buy their drugs. And, we are going to make it very uncomfortable for drug dealers to sell their drugs in our community,” McCafferty said.

The chief said the task force will be working different shifts, depending on the need for their presence.

“We are now working on the schedule for the officers who will be on the task force. We plan to make a difference,” promised McCafferty.
