Art contest announces major sponsor

WEIRTON — The “Weirton – The City Forged by Steel” art competition has announced that the Frontier Group of Companies has signed on as the major sponsor for the January 2018 art show and award ceremony.

“With a generous $1,000 donation to Renaissance Weirton Corp., Frontier has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the support and growth of the arts in Weirton,” said show chair Alecia Ford. “I see the owners at our local restaurants and community meetings — their interest and involvement in Weirton is so refreshing.”

The Frontier Group of Companies purchased the defunct sections of the ArcelorMittal properties and is currently clearing the site for redevelopment.

Inspired by this change in the downtown skyline, the “Weirton — The City Forged by Steel” art competition, calls for artists to capture the impact of buildings and the mill on the city and community.

As the old buildings on property owned by Frontier are demolished, Ford said, the available land will soon be a blank canvas of in its own way, ready for new development.

Frontier’s CEO David Franjoine has been a supporter of this project since the beginning.

“This is going to be a major change in the community,” Franjoine said. “Weirton is 70 years old as a city this year. It’s a perfect time to honor the industry that built Weirton and look forward to new investment in the future.”

A $500 Best in Show prize will be awarded at the competition’s opening reception on Jan. 20.

First- and second-place prizes of $200 and $100, respectively, will be awarded in specific categories. Any artist over age 18 is eligible.

The prospectus for the competition and registration information can be found on the City of Weirton website at www.cityofweirton.com.

Artists also can register in person and pick up a printed prospectus and entry form by visiting the Weirton City Manager’s Office.

Registration for the show runs through Nov. 18, but artists will have through Jan. 11, to create their work.
