Fund established to aid New Cumberland woman

NEW CUMBERLAND — A fund has been established for a Hancock County woman whose home was destroyed last week by fire.

Shirley Davis lost all her belongings as well as her pets when fire ripped through her New Cumberland home, located along Brickyard Bend Road, Thursday. All of Hancock County’s fire departments were called to the scene and worked for several hours to extinguish the blaze

The fund will go to help with expenses for Davis, who, according to family members did not have insurance on the home. Four of her five dogs, identified as Yorkshire terriers, perished in the fire.

Family members have set up the fund through the New Cumberland branch of Hancock County Savings Bank, following an initial donation made by Davis Brothers Pharmacy.

Funds collected will help Davis and also go toward expenses to handle demolition of the home.

Those interested in making a donation may do so at the New Cumberland branch with the donations going to the “Shirley Davis Fire Fund.”

Fire crews from New Cumberland and New Manchester were initially called to Davis’ home around 4:45 p.m. Thursday. The blaze was fully involved upon fire crews’ arrival. Firefighters from Lawrenceville, Newell, Chester and Oakland also were called and assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

Davis was able to escape the home, but was flown to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she was treated for smoke inhalation and released shortly afterwards. She is currently staying with family members.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
