Weirton VFW halts NFL games

WEIRTON — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2716 in Weirton has added itself to the list of area veterans organizations no longer showing professional football games in their halls.

According to Mike Rutledge, Post 2716 commander, the membership voted Monday to stop the viewing of National Football League games, effective immediately.

Veterans organizations in the Tri-State Area have made the decision in reaction to the practice by some NFL players to kneel or sit during the playing of the national anthem prior to games.

The American Legion Post 10, also in Weirton, announced it had voted Thursday to stop showing games, and, in early October, members of American Legion Post 121 in Chester made a similar decision.

Throughout the current NFL season, numerous players and other team personnel have knelt or sat during the playing of the national anthem prior to the start of their games.

Some players have said the practice is a form of protest against racism and other social issues.

NFL officials have ruled players would be able to kneel without facing any penalty.
