WLU raises recycling awareness

WEST LIBERTY –West Liberty University’s history club welcomed students for the first cardboard wars on Wednesday as a recycling project to raise awareness for sustainability.

“Part of what I want them to understand is that the little things they learn or do on a daily basis become history,” said Darrin Cox, associate professor of history at WLU.

According to Cox, recycling plays a large part in history, especially at this point. Cardboard wars was created by Cox to not only educate students on sustainability and history, but to also assist students in being more active with each other and the community.

Students used makeshift swords and double headed axes fashioned from cardboard to compete in historic re-enactments. Human biology major Jordan Shultz was the winner during the activities.

“We have events all throughout the year, but this is the first time we have held cardboard wars. We also take part in the viking living history project where current students and alumni members come together to learn about clothing and armor from that time,” said Cox.

The history club members have visited elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in an effort to help engage children in history. “We try to be as hands-on as possible. These types of events are important because it helps them develop skills needed to speak with kids and adults, personally and professionally,” Cox said.

Once cardboard wars came to a close, students then collected the remains and placed them in a recycling bin together.

Cox said events such as cardboard wars help raise awareness and reduce the carbon footprint.

“Scientists just recently warned that we are destroying our planet, so getting involved to help combat this is important,” Cox said.
