‘Stuff the Truck’ event in will help feed familes

WHEELING — Bethlehem Apostolic Temple in North Wheeling again will attempt to feed those in need this Easter weekend, but money is tight.

The church’s annual Easter food basket giveaway is set to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center, 407 Main St. The 27th-annual event has been known to help several hundred people with Easter meals, Easter clothes, school supplies and various other items.

It is a first-come, first-served based event, prompting many people to line up hours before the doors open.

The Rev. D.W. Cummings said this project would be impossible without the local support of those in the area such as Main Street Bank and others. Riesbeck’s Food Market in Elm Grove, Kroger and Jebbia’s are a few of the other businesses that have stepped up to help this year.

Last year, nearly 1,000 people showed up for the Easter food basket giveaway.

No one went home empty-handed, Cummings said. However, this year church leaders are hoping for a miracle of sorts to feed all those who turn out for the giveaway this year.

“This project is too big for our church alone. Although we have come short of our goals for this project for this year, we are extremely grateful for the faithful support of Main Street Bank helping us to carry out our mission,” Cummings said.

Church administrator Latisha Cummings said Tuesday there is still time to donate. “There is always room for more whether monetary, non-perishable food. We would welcome that,” she said.

To help the cause, the church will hold a “Stuff the Truck” event from 4-6 p.m. today outside Riesbeck’s in Elm Grove. Donations will be accepted at that time or call (304) 233-8899 for other ways to help.
