Hancock County Schools closed today, mudslides reported

NEW CUMBERLAND — Hancock County Schools canceled classes today after mudslides closed a couple of roads in the county.

Jeremy Ober, Hancock County Emergency Management Agency director, said crews have been working since 2 a.m. today to clear a section of state Route 2 between Chester and Newell.

“It has been a prolonged effort,” he said, adding schools closed because of other mudslides which may occur with the saturated ground.

Ober said there have been no reports of flooding from creeks and streams.
