Military artifacts’ workshop planned

WEIRTON — With the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I being observed in 2018, commemorative events and exhibits are being planned across the country.

One such event will be held at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center at 9 a.m., April 14, with a presentation by Weirton native Paul Zuros.

The workshop is free, but registration is required. To reserve a spot, contact Elizabeth Satterfield at (304) 290-7546 or eps0002@mix.wvu.edu. Reservations also may be made through Eventbrite.

Zuros’ presentation, part of the West Virginia Association of Museums’ 2018 Educational Workshop Series, will focus on 20th century military artifacts.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own items

The program will be held in the Discovery Room on the second floor and will begin with a discussion of the two world wars and the objects that most often are associated with those conflicts.

A brief history of the role of Weirton Steel in World War II will be discussed. Using the collection of the Weirton Museum as well as some of the presenter’s personal collection, the workshop will conclude with the identifying and preservation practices of these artifacts.

Zuros has been collecting 20th century military objects for more than a decade.

Over the years, he has offered his personal collection for display, and presented programs on World War II history and the history of Weirton Steel and their role in World War II.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from West Virginia University and a master’s in public history from Duquesne University in 2012. He currently is the executive director of the Historic Craik-Patton House Museum in Charleston.

The West Virginia Association of Museums was founded in 1990. The mission of the organization has been to serve, educate, advocate for and enhance communications within the museum community. WVAM carries out this mission by listening to its members and serving their interests and by keeping the members abreast of current standards and activities on a national scale.
