Weirton housing development moving forward

WEIRTON — A long-planned housing development is moving forward in the city.

Weirton Planning Commission members, on Wednesday, voted 5-0 in approving plans for the first phase of the new St. James Gate development, to be located on property which once was home to the golf course of Pleasant Valley Country Club.

St. James Gate is being developed by AB Property Management Inc.

“We’ve been working with the developers for the last several months,” city Planning and Development Director Mark A. Miller said.

Miller noted there were minor issues with the bonding requirements which needed finalized, but all city departments had signed off on the plans.

“Other than the bonding, they’ve satisfied all of our requirements,” Miller said.

The property is zoned as an R-1 district, for single family residential sites.

Local attorney Dan Guida, who is representing the developers, noted there are 38 lots for the first phase, with plans for 16 single unit patio homes and 11 duplexes.

Quad units are not currently in the plans.

“This doesn’t have that, at least the first phase doesn’t,” Guida said.

Rob Strobel, general contractor, said the units would begin selling for $230,000 each.

Members of the commission offered their congratulations on the development following its approval.

“You have a beautiful place there,” Commissioner Nathan Mazur, who participated by phone, said.

Commission Chair Chuck Robinson said he has heard only positive comments about the prospects of the development.

“We’re happy to see it on its way,” Robinson said.

The St. James Gate development initially was announced in September 2016, receiving a preliminary plat approval for its first phase from the Planning Commission.
