Portion of Main Street closed due to oil spill

WEIRTON — One of the northbound lanes of Main Street is anticipated to remain closed for much of today following an oil spill Monday afternoon.

Weirton Fire Chief Jerry Shumate discussed the closure during Monday’s meeting of Weirton Council.

“They had an oil spill in the area of Gate 5,” Shumate noted. “There will be a one-lane restriction until it gets cleaned up.”

Shumate said the oil was reported to have come from the No. 9 Tandem mill inside ArcelorMittal’s facilities.

Crews from the city’s Public Works Department responded to the spill site, Shumate said, placing traffic cones to assist with the traffic diversion.
