Starvaggi Pool closed for repair following flooding
WEIRTON — Starvaggi Memorial Pool will be closed indefinitely following filter room flooding from the recent rains in the area.
Water in the filter room reached depths of 12 feet and submerged all of the electrical components that operate the filtration and disinfectant systems that service the swimming pool, making operation of the equipment impossible, according to parks officials.
“It’s unfortunate to say the least,” Park Board Executive Director Coty Shingle said. “We’re very proud of our facility and we’ve had a great start to the season, but this will take us a few days to recover.”
Shingle stated the flooding of the filter room not only jeopardized the electrical and mechanical components that were under water, but the water also moved several components around in the filter room and damaged plumbing.
An exact timetable for repairs is not yet known, but the pool will not be operational until repairs are complete, Shingle said. Until Starvaggi Pool is reopened, the Park Board will honor Starvaggi memberships at the Weirton Millsop Community Center.
“It seems like the least we can do,” Shingle said. “We want to try our very best to provide the services our patrons have paid for. It’s our hope we’ll be back up and running soon, but in the mean time we’d like our members to know how much we appreciate their loyalty and support.”
The Park Board will update the progress of repairs and pool availability on its website and the Starvaggi Pool Facebook page.
