Water board: Long-term project almost complete

WEIRTON — The finishing touches are being made on a long-term water project in the city.

During Thursday’s meeting of the Weirton Area Water Board, Steve Hamit of Thrasher Engineering reported contractors have completed all but a few final touches and tests for the project, with a leak test remaining.

“Once that’s complete, Thrasher will have a walk-through with the water board and James White,” Hamit said.

James White Construction and Alex Paris Construction have been handling the work for the project, which was designed to prevent widespread water outages in the city and surrounding areas, similar to events in 2011.

Hamit also reported James White Construction has completed the testing batch of the water board’s new radio read meter system.

“It was able to produce the bills that were acceptable,” he said.

Assistant Director Sam Stoneking explained there had been some issues with the transmission of data to the board’s billing system, but that has been addressed, as has a payment issue with the billing as part of the testing.

Stoneking noted, with those issues cleared up, crews from James White Construction will resume the installation of new meters.

“They’ll be starting back on meter installs Monday,” Stoneking said.
