Classic cars to be on display at Highlands on Labor Day
WHEELING — Labor Day holds many traditions in the Ohio Valley, with one in particular that brings hundreds of car, truck and bike enthusiasts to The Highlands.
The annual Dan Dague Memorial District 29-L Lions Club Car and Bike Show for Sight will be held Monday in the parking lot south of J.C. Penney at The Highlands.
This car and bike show will hold registration from 8 a.m. to noon. A $10 donation is asked per vehicle. Judging will take place from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the awards presentation beginning at 2:30 p.m. with a pause to announce the winner of the 50-50 raffle. There will be a number of categories for judging and more than 165 trophies to be presented. Nearly 600 dash plaques will be available for participants.
There is no fee for visitors. Ohio County Schools is supplying school bus shuttle rides around the site, as there will be hundreds of vehicles parked there on Monday.
Visitors and participants at the car show will be treated to music; a live auction, plus a table full of basket-type auction items; a 50-50 raffle; music; and numerous vendors on site. Among items for the auction are several West Virginia University-themed gear and a model train.
This event was started in 2002 with Lion Dan Dague, who launched the car show to raise money for the West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation. Dague continued the car show each year until his death in 2008, when his fellow Lions named the shows in his honor. The Highlands has hosted the event for more than 10 years.
Dague’s widow, Eva, said she’s is pleased that the show continues to be so well-received by a caring public.
“We try to make this a fun event … that was Dan’s goal,” Dague said. “We just appreciate everyone’s support.”
“Everyone” includes Lions members from across the state who travel to Ohio County to help with this major fundraiser for the state Lions’ Sight Conservation Foundation, Dague said.
Lions members ask visitors to bring their used glasses and hearing aids to the car show to be refurbished for those in need. A table with health-related information will be available at the event.
The rain date for the event is Sept. 9.
