Contract projection

The United Steelworkers union projected a sign from the USW Local 2911 Hall onto the side of a building at ArcelorMittal Weirton early today. Contract negotiations between the union and ArcelorMittal began in July with a contract expiration coming Sept. 1. The previous contract went about seven months beyond expiration, with the union and company working through a contract extension. The union is negotiating with ArcelorMittal and US Steel. Katrina Fitzgerald, who is with strategic campaigns with the USW, said the sign is making the rounds of plants in negotiations in the area. An update from the USW indicated contract offers have been exchanged and talks continue, with the most substantial discussions so far dealing with repair and maintenance and capital expenditure items. Contracting out, health care, pensions and other contract language remain issues. The ArcelorMittal talks cover more than 15,000 workers from 13 locals in Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. — Paul Giannamore
