Brooke tables lighting, tile bid

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Commission Tuesday moved to table a bid for new lighting and ceiling tiles for the county courthouse.

The move came after Lombardi Development of Follansbee submitted the only bid, an apparent bid of $282,500, more than was estimated for the project.

County Commissioner Stacey Wise expressed appreciation to Lombardi and to a handful of others who attended a pre-bid meeting for the project last week.

She said because the commission was awarded a state grant for the project, three bids may be required and the commission might have to advertise again.

The commission has secured a $100,000 grant from the state Courthouse Facilities Improvement Council for the project, which involves replacing exterior and interior lights with LED versions in a move to improve energy efficiency.

The grant requires a 20 percent match from the county.

In other business:

• The commission appointed Richard Nester of Follansbee to the Brooke County Solid Waste Authority.

There still are two vacancies on the board, which oversees the county’s recycling program. Anyone interested in them can submit a letter of interest to the office of County Clerk Sylvia Benzo at the county courthouse.

• A resident of Coss Lane complained of someone blocking the road with a parked vehicle. He said he believes the driver is involved in illegal activity.

Sheriff Larry Palmer said he would investigate.
