Two injured following ATV crash

NEW CUMBERLAND — Two individuals were hospitalized Saturday following an all-terrain vehicle crash on Lyons Road, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

According to information released Monday morning by the sheriff’s department, county 911 dispatch received a call at approximately 6:45 p.m. Saturday reporting an ATV crash on Lyons Road just outside of Weirton. Reports indicated the ATV had crashed into a pole and two people were unresponsive with live power lines down nearby.

Sheriff’s deputies responded, along with members of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and Hancock County Ambulance Service, finding emergency care being provided to both individuals by passersby who were nurses.

Both the male driver and female passenger were transported by ambulance to Weirton Medical Center, and then flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. As of Monday morning, both individuals were reported to be in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s department.

Preliminary investigations show the driver of the vehicle was unable to negotiate a left curve in the roadway, causing the vehicle to slide sideways, according to the sheriff’s department. The passenger side of the vehicle struck the utility pole, shearing it and bringing down the lines.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the incident, according to the sheriff’s department.
