14-year-old girl dies; shot in park

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — Authorities have identified a 14-year-old girl who died after being found shot at a park.

The girl found Monday has been identified as 14-year-old Taylor Sorera Smith of Charlotte.

Authorities say the shooting happened in River Street Park in Mount Holly. The girl was shot multiple times and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Third man guilty for burning cross

PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A third man has pleaded guilty to setting a wooden cross on fire in an interracial couple’s yard.

Federal prosecutors said that William Dennis, 56, pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to threaten, intimidate and interfere with an interracial couple’s enjoyment of their housing rights. Two other men previously pleaded guilty.

Officials say the men were living in a largely white community when an African-American couple moved into a house on his street. On Halloween 2012, Sigler and two others decided to burn a cross in the couple’s yard to intimidate them.

Child, 6, found in mobile meth lab

SOMERSET, Pa. — A man has been jailed on drug and child endangerment charges because police say a 6-year-old child was in a car that also contained a mobile methamphetamine lab.

Pennsylvania State Police stopped 25-year-old Nathan Schnitzler’s car because they say it had a faulty brake light. A woman and the child were in the car. They also saw a loaded hypodermic needle and later found substances used to cook up the powerfully addictive stimulant.

Police say there was also burn and chemical residue inside the car that appeared to come from a previous explosion.

Man raped same woman twice

HALIFAX, Pa. — A central Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he raped the same woman twice, eight days apart.

Bruce Shomper, 46, faces 31 counts including rape, burglary, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse for the incidents at another home in the township on March 23 and March 31.

The woman said that Shomper showed up drunk at her home and entered through an unlocked door before forcing her to perform sex acts. Eight days later, Shomper returned to the woman’s home and pounded on the door until she answered, then forced his way inside, choked her, hit her in the face, and again raped her.

6.1 magnitude earthquake in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran — A powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck northeastern Iran near the holy city of Mashhad today, killing at least two people as residents fled onto the streets and aftershocks shook the region.

The shallow temblor damaged at least four villages near its epicenter in a remote mountainous area home to 5,000 people. It said rescue teams and helicopters had deployed in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province to the area to assess the damage.

At least two people were killed. The semi-official ISNA news agency said 11 people were injured.

Ivanka paying $15,000 in rent

WASHINGTON — Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, are paying $15,000 a month in rent for their house in a posh Washington neighborhood.

The rental rate was included in documents filed with the District of Columbia housing department. The White House had only disclosed that President Donald Trump’s daughter was paying a “fair market” rate for the house.Neighbors have complained about Trump, her staff and her security detail leaving open garbage bags out on the curb, taking up public parking spaces and blocking sidewalks unnecessarily.

Reused rocket back in port

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX’s first reused rocket is back in port, five days after launching a satellite.

The singed 15-story booster returned atop a barge to Florida’s Port Canaveral on Tuesday. It was the second flight for the Falcon 9’s first-stage core — and a first for SpaceX.
