BICKERSTAFF, Bernard “Red,” 84, of Steubenville, died Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Acuity Hospital.
He was born May 14, 1928, in Steubenville. He is the son of the late Benjamin and Alice Lee Bickerstaff.
Bernard is also preceded in death by two brothers, William and Glen; also one sister, Madeline Bickerstaff.
Bernard was retired from the city of Steubenville Fire Department with 30 years of service as fire chief. He also worked at Schaffer Awning, Haskin’s Floor’s and Jefferson County Metropolitan Housing.
Surviving is his wife, Joan Kopras Bickerstaff whom he married August 1, 1948; one son, Phillip (Nancy) Bickerstaff of Hebron, IN; one daughter, Paula (Hugh) Kinsel of Sugar Hill, GA; one brother, Barry (Lois) Bickerstaff of Wintersville; two sisters, Ellen Rennie of Steubenville and Betty Ferguson of Wintersville; eight grandchildren, Hugh, Elizabeth, Adam and Stephen Kinsel, Todd and Nathan Bickerstaff, Eric Miller and Heidi Duran; four great-grandchildren Dylan, Kaitlyn, Cody and Allie Bickerstaff; and many nieces and nephews including Gary Bickerstaff.
Bernard was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and American Legion Argonne Post 33. He served his country in the U.S. Army.
Calling hours will be Monday 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with Fr. Tim Huffman, celebrant. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
There will a vigil service 2 p.m. Monday.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
