Jeanne Cable

CABLE, Jeanne Sharpe. 95, of Austin Lake, Toronto, OH, passed away peacefully Monday, January 21, 2013, at son, William and Marsha Cable’s home at Austin Lake.

Born October 3, 1917, in Cleveland, OH, she was the daughter of the late Jessie G. (Waters) Sharpe and William Tate Sharpe.

Mrs. Cable was raised in Akron until her marriage in 1936 to the late Glenn Clark Cable of Canton. She and husband, Glenn and his father, Austin B. Cable, purchased property and moved to Jefferson County to build Austin Lake.

She served as secretary/treasurer of Austin Lake since 1945 and worked and managed it with her family. Austin Lake, first a real estate development and a park for daily swimming and picnics, introduced camping around 1960, making Austin Lake one of the oldest campgrounds in Ohio.

She was an active water skier. She planned, directed, made costumes, choreographed and performed in Labor Day ski shows. She is fondly remembered for teaching waterskiing to many local residents as well as foreign visitors. She was well known as a local artist of various media including pottery, acrylics and batik. She was proud of winning Best of Show at an Oglebay art show. Jeanne was an animal and nature enthusiast. Throughout her lifetime she owned exotic pets including several Capuchin Ringtail monkeys and a spider monkey. She was seen often with her monkey CR on her shoulder.

Her 67 year legacy at Austin Lake in Jefferson County lives on through all her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was also past president of the Steubenville Art Association, a member of Tavares Boat Club, Eustis Art League and American Water Ski Association. She was a Presbyterian by faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Carole Cable Blake of Maitland, FL and Cinda Cable (Wayne) Hollister of Toronto, OH, and a son, William B. (Marsha) Cable of Austin Lake, Toronto, OH.

She had eight grandchildren: Lauren H. (deceased) and (Jim) Crossley of Imperial, PA; Deborah H (Alan) Lee of Beavercreek, OH; Brett Hollister of Thompson Station, TN; Ariana C. (Mike) Novak of Austin Lake; Austin B. (Dawn) Cable of Austin Lake; Courtney T. Cable of Akron, OH; Douglas Blake of Huntsville, AL and Amy Lux of Winter Springs, FL.

Ten great-grandchildren survive: Sean, Heather and Brian Crossley of Imperial, PA; Anna and Aaron Lee of Beavercreek, OH; Sarah Hollister of Thompson Station, TN; Gage and Leila Cable of Austin Lake and Steven Lux and Nicholas Westfall of Winter Springs, FL.

There are no visitation hours or services planned at this time.

A memorial service to celebrate Jeanne’s life will be held at the Hilltop Presbyterian Church, County Road 46 (Church Road), Toronto at a later date to be announced.

Memorial contributions in memory of Jeanne may be made to the Hilltop Presbyterian Church.
