Margaret Evelyn Walker
WALKER, Margaret Evelyn, 92, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Autumn Healthcare of Adena.
She was born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, on Jan. 29, 1921, and grew up in Adena, was graduated from Adena High School in 1939, and enjoyed riding and training horses from her earliest years and throughout her life.
She attended Muskingum College and was graduated in 1943. She taught English at Adena High School for several years early in her teaching career with a break in. the middle of that time at Ohio State University where she received her Master’s Degree.
At Ball State Teachers’ College in Muncie, Indiana she taught in the laboratory school for gifted students, and this was followed by 43 years of teaching English at Charles F. Brush High School in the South Euclid/Lyndhurst School System and teaching speeding reading in the summers.
She always said her very best students in all her years of teaching were in Adena High School where many first generation Americans pushed their children to do well so they would not have to work in the coal mines as did many fathers.
While teaching in Adena, she was an officer in the Adena Women’s Club and attended the Adena Presbyterian Church. She spent many summers teaching horseback riding at a camp for girls outside of Cleveland. She was very active in The College Club in Cleveland, and after retiring from teaching, she took a leadership role in The Investment Club associated with The College Club.
She was a kind and loving aunt, daughter, sister, friend, and an excellent teacher, who cared not only about teaching English to students but was interested in students as persons who needed encouragement and guidance. Many a student might never have gone on to college had it not been for her encouragement.
In addition to her parents, Margaret, or Peg, as she was known by friends and family, was preceded in death by her sister, Mary E. Walker and her brother, Robert W. Walker.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her brother, Willis C. Walker of Carrollton, Ohio; eight nieces and nephews, Ann Walker of Tucson, Arizona, Betty Walker Campbell of Adena, Robert A. Walker of Sunnyvale, California, David Walker (Bobbi) of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Janet Walker of Spokane, Washington, Mary Jane Walker May (Ron) of Lisbon, Ohio, John C. Walker (Gail) of Carrollton, Ohio, and Jo Ann Walker, also of Carrollton; as well as great- nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives will be received at the Borkoski Funeral Home in Adena on Saturday, April 20th from 24 and 68 p.m. and 1 p.m. until time of funeral service on Sunday, April 21st at 2 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harrisville with interment at the Hicksite Cemetery in Emerson.
