Larry L. Smith
SMITH, Larry L. “Smitty,” 63, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013 at Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville, Ohio.
Known by his friends as “Kolorado,” he was born September 11, 1949, in Steubenville, Ohio, a son of the late Paul E. and Mildred (Blankenship) Smith Sr.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Smith, and a niece, Lacy Ault.
Smitty was retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., where he worked in the railroad department. He served his country for three-and-a-half years in the U.S. Army, serving 16 months overseas in Korea. He was a life member of the following veterans organizations: the Brilliant American Legion Post 573, the V.F.W. 4811 of Yorkville, Ohio, Disabled Veteran Chapter 117 in Bellaire, Ohio, American Vets Post 275, Steubenville, the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 70 and the Jefferson County Veterans Association, Friendship Park, Smithfield, Ohio.
He was also a life member and supporter of the Lakota and Sioux Indian School for Children of South Dakota; Boys Town Children of Wisconsin and a member of the Jefferson County Council in Steubenville; a life member of Arbor Day foundation; a member of the Brilliant Boat Club and the Georges Run United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his sister, Cindy Lou (Aaron) Reese of Empire, Ohio; a brother, Paul (Betty) Smith Jr. of Toronto, Ohio; a daughter, Melissa Smith Alvis of Steubenville; a son, Chad Evert-Lee Smith of Steubenville; a stepson, Timon Lee Smith of Mingo Junction; a granddaughter, Maddison Alexis Alvis; and two nieces and two nephews.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Bob Carson officiating. Interment will follow at New Alexandria Cemetery with military honors by the Brilliant American Legion Post 573.
There will be a service by the Brilliant American Legion on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
