PORTER, Raymond, 86, formerly of Wintersville, Ohio, passed away on May 20, 2013, in Gilbert, Arizona where he resided for the past 36 years.
He was born April 4, 1927, in Steubenville, Ohio, a son of the late George and Elizabeth (Feist) Porter.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Catherine Porter on Dec. 1, 2012, and brothers, George (2008) and Norman (2004).
He is survived by sons, Tom (Anna) of Wintersville and Terry (Ruth) of Gilbert, Arizona. He is also survived by brother, Laurence Porter of Wintersville; and six grandchildren, Marianne (Steve), Lauren (Mel), Rebecca, Andrew (Jenn), Bethany (Gabe), and Michael.
After leaving high school Raymond served in the WWII oceangoing Merchant Marine in 1944-45. He then became a structural ironworker for the remainder of his working life working out of Wheeling, WV Local 549 and Phoenix, AZ Local 75 and retiring in 1992.
His fondest hope in life was that his sons graduate college so they would not have to labor as he did. With a few bumps in the road the sons fulfilled his hope. That hope then moved to his grandchildren for whom he had set up a trust fund when they were all still very young to assist with their educations should they need it. With his constant encouragement his grandchildren all graduated college, several with advanced degrees, and have successful careers. No one has to labor. Mission accomplished Pap. Rest in peace.
Local arrangements are at the Clarke Funeral Home in Toronto with burial at the Ft. Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville.
According to Raymond’s wishes services and burial will be private.
Please make a donation in his memory to the charitable organization of your choice. Raymond always thought the Salvation Army does good work.
