Raymond Stephen Tompos
TOMPOS, Raymond Stephen, 64, of Weirton, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, in the Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV.
Ray was born July 9, 1948, in Steubenville, OH to the late Senator William and Helen Bambrick Tompos.
He was also preceded in death by his niece, Brandi Lynne Tompos.
Ray is survived by his companion of 22 years, Mary Carden and his brother, Tom Tompos and companion Wanda Channing all of Weirton.
Ray was a member of the First Christian Church of Weirton. He was a lifelong resident of Weirton and a successful local businessman for most of his life. He was in the 1966 graduating class of Weir High School and a 1970 graduate of West Liberty College with a BA degree in Political Science. He was elected Hancock County Surveyor twice, as well as being a member of the Democratic Executive Committee. He was a delegate to the 1972 Democratic Convention in Miami Beach, Florida.
As a young man, Ray played bass horn in the Weir High Band in the famed 60’s era and played bass guitar for several professional area bands. Ray was well known for his generosity to the needy, especially to the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.
Friends will be received Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton. The Reverend Kevin Bowers will officiate. Entombment will follow in New Cumberland Cemetery.
