Judith Marie (Day) Hopps
HOPPS, Judith Marie (Day) – October 26, 1939 – May 21, 2013.
Judi was born in Wintersville, Ohio. She passed peacefully in San Diego after months in hospice care.
She was the daughter of Evelyn (Moran) Day of Westerville, OH and John Donald Day of Wintersville, OH.
In 1948, Judi moved with her family to Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from Coral Gables High in 1957. She married Gordon Lee Hopps in 1962. They were married for over 40 years, spending most of their lives in San Diego.
Judi worked for 20 years as an aide for San Diego Unified School District. She attended College Park Pres., which later became Faith Pres. Church. Judi and Gordon were devoted members serving the church faithfully. Judi was a member of P.E.O. Women’s group, the Red Hat Society and Spreckels Organ Society. She sat on the board of the College Area Community Council for many years. Gordon preceded her in death in April 2003.
Judi adored her grandchildren and was active in their daily lives. She was so proud of their accomplishments; rarely missing an event or award ceremony.
Judi was blessed to be the middle of three sisters. Joyce Vanderslice, of Otto, North Carolina is the older and Donna Jean Sweeney, of Steubenville, Ohio, the younger. They shared very close relationships all their lives.
Judi will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to her family, incredible kindness and lifelong ability to keep friendships, no matter time or distance.
She is survived by her sisters, Joyce and Jean; her son, Greg Hopps; her daughter, Susan Hopps Tatum; son-in-law, Tom Tatum; her grandchildren, Meagan, Lauren, Trent; and devoted friends far and wide.
A service celebrating Judi’s life will be held on July 6th at 10 a.m. at Faith Pres. Church in San Diego. The family is accepting donations for a new organ pipe for Spreckels Organ Society, honoring Judi.
