Avery Furbee

FURBEE, Avery D., 86, of Huntley, IL, formerly of Weirton, WV, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013, with his family by his side.

Avery was born April 22, 1927, in Glendale, OH, the son of the late Roy and Lucy Cecil Furbee.

Through help from folks at Weirton Steel, where Avery was first employed, he was able to reach his dream of graduating as an electrical engineer from West Virginia University.

He then went on to work for General Electric, living in Schenectady, NY, and Milwaukee, WI. He then moved to Cleveland, OH, several years later, where he accepted a job at Picker Instruments, and eventually settled in Elmhurst, IL, as president of the firm’s Dunlee Division.

Avery retired in 1992, and after brief stints in Sun City, AZ, Terra Alta, WV, and Urbana, IL, he ended up in Huntley, IL. Avery was very grateful to his parents; E.T. Weir, Weirton’s founding father; and to the town of Weirton for providing him a strong foundation that led to his achievement of multiple patents in the field of X-ray tube design.

Avery was a very curious man with an amazing memory and a wry sense of humor. He was a great story teller, and the tales of his youth live on through his family. He had a real passion for anything he was working on, whether it was learning to sail or cross country ski, his knowledge of history, or his study of the human body.

He will be greatly missed, and is survived by son, Andrew and his wife Sandy, of Hudson, OH; daughters, Erin of Portland, OR, Meghan of Elmhurst, IL; granddaughters, Lindsey, Kendall, Heather, Abby; brothers, Edmond of Weirton, WV, George of Cranberry Township, PA; former wife Gwendolyn White Ying.

The committal service will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Dr. J.E. Rudiger presiding at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 135 Gilson Ave., Weirton, WV, where interment will follow.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Weirton, WV.
