John Kirlangitis

KIRLANGITIS, John, 96, of Follansbee, was taken home to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 23, 2013.

He was born in Follansbee on July 2, 1017, the son of the late Nick and Clara Kirlangitis, John is also preceded in death by his brothers, Gus and Jim, sister, Virginia Frio.

John retired as the co- owner/operator of Weirton Plate & Glass and co- owner/operator of Olympic Contracting in 1983.

He was a charter member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church since 1945; John is also a member of the AHEPA, teamster, carpenter Local 186, and the American Legion. He was instrumental in the remodeling efforts at the church that he loved so much over the years.

His amazing spirit, warmth, helpful hand and positive attitude that was reflected in his standard response, “I’ve never felt better in my life,” is an example of his cheery nature. The world is a better place because he had a compassion for giving to so many.

John proudly served his country as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during WWII as a bombardier in the South Pacific, Hawaii, Kwajalean and Guam.

Surviving are his wife: Dorothy, to whom he was married 78 years, sons; Nick (Marlene) of Wintersville and John (Janet) of Steubenville: daughters; Carol (Louis) Craig of Wintersville and Melody Bowman of Canton. Nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Tsamous of Long Beach, CA, one brother, Tom Marudis of Ft. Myers, FL, also many nephews and nieces.

Calling hours are today 5-8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 300 S. Fourth St. Steubenville and on Thursday 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m., Fr. Nicholas Halkios will officiate. Burial will be at Union Cemetery. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.
