Maria Chernenko

CHERNENKO, Maria, passed peacefully away September 6, 2013, at Valley Haven Geriatric Center in Beech Bottom, West Virginia.

A lifelong resident of Wellsburg, she was born September 18, 1921, to her parents, the late John G. Chernenko and Sophia Chernenko.

She was also preceded in death by sisters, Tillie Sliday and Anne Husick of Wellsburg and Sophie Bowman of Follansbee; niece, Mary Kathryn Sliday of Beech Bottom; and nephew, John J. Sliday of Colliers, West Virginia.

Maria is survived by her loving brother, John G. Chernenko of Wellsburg; five devoted nephews, W. Fred Stumpf of Grants, NM, Gary C. Chernenko of Charleston, WV, Buster Bowman of Toronto, OH, Ray Bowman of McDonald, PA, and Marc B. Chernenko Wellsburg, WV; three cherished nieces, Marianne Pocsik of Prospect, CT, Janet Chernenko Mears of Huntington, WV and Pam Bowman Meca of Follansbee, WV.

She leaves many great- and great-great- nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.

Maria was a longtime quality control supervisor at Arkell and Smith Company and its many successors, working more than 50 years at the Wellsburg facility. Upon her retirement from Smurfit-Stone Container Company in August 1989 she was recognized and honored as the longest tenured employee in company history.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. at the Chambers Funeral Home, 1030 Main Street, Wellsburg, WV, (304) 737-3551, with Pastor Angel Adams, officiating.

Interment will follow in Kadesh Chapel Cemetery, Beech Bottom, WV.
