PIERCE, William Day “Bill,” 75, of County Rd. 68, Toronto, Ohio, passed away at 8:09 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Salem Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Pierce was born March 7, 1938, in East Liverpool, Ohio, a son of the late William A. and Margaret L. (Shivers) Pierce, and had lived his entire life in the area.
Bill worked as the meat manager at the former Hillyer’s grocery store in Lisbon and later at the Poland Giant Eagle, where he retired in 2005.
He was a member and elder of the former Trinity Presbyterian Church of Lisbon, where he taught Sunday school for many years.
Bill was a private pilot and had owned several airplanes. He was also an avid motorcyclist and gunsmith.
He is survived and will be dearly remembered by his family and wife, Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Knight) Pierce, whom he married March 30, 1993; daughters, Robin (Steve) Weyant of Salem, OH, Pam (Chuck) Merdich of Columbiana, OH, Jane (Mike) Ketchum of Lisbon, OH, and Jennifer (Steve) Pieren of Poland, OH; sons, John Pierce of Leetonia, OH, and Joel (Heather) Pierce of Willis, TX; stepdaughter, Debra Owens of Toronto, OH; stepsons, Michael (Janet) Boni of East Liverpool, OH and Douglas Reese of Toronto, OH; sisters, Margaret A. Abrams of Akron, OH, and Judy (Ralph) Erhart of Bucyrus, OH; brother, John (Ann) Pierce of North Carolina; 21 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son, William Pierce; and infant daughter, Susan Pierce.
Private calling hours and funeral services were held Saturday. October 5, 2013, at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home, Lisbon, with Pastor Bob Rowley, Chaplain of the Salem Community Hospital officiating.
Private burial followed at the Sugar Grove Union Cemetery in Toronto.
